There are home inspections… and then there are Taos home inspections.
Just last month, a client asked if their potential dream home had “any surprises.” I said, confidently, “Nothing major.” Then the inspector popped his head out of the crawlspace like an overworked prairie dog and announced he’d found:
-
a vintage lawn chair,
-
one perfectly preserved boot, and
-
a lizard the size of a small emotional support dragon.
Welcome to real estate in northern New Mexico.
Clients from out of state always think inspections are boring paperwork. Sweetheart, no. In Taos they’re part treasure hunt, part archeological dig, part wildlife documentary. I’ve seen century-old wiring that looks like it was installed by someone with a grudge. I’ve found doors that open into walls. I’ve stood in kitchens where every cabinet knob was different, like a chaotic art installation.
But here’s the thing: the surprises are fixable. The comedy is just part of the charm.
And luckily, I know every roofer, electrician, plumber, critter-wrangler, and lizard relocation specialist in the county.
Buying a house in Taos isn’t just finding a home—it’s joining the adventure club.
